Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)

  1. Understand the fundamental concepts of cyber security, types of cyber threats and cyber frauds, and the importance of securing digital information and networks.
  2. Identify common vulnerabilities and attacks and apply suitable countermeasures using security tools and best practices.
  3. Analyze network, system, and application security mechanisms, including cryptography, authentication, and firewalls.
  4. Demonstrate ethical understanding and compliance with cyber laws, digital privacy, and professional responsibilities in the cyber domain.

Course Outline

Unit I: Introduction

Introduction to Cyber Security: overview, need for information security, CIA triad (Confidentiality, Integrity, Availability), security threats and attacks: malware, phishing, ransomware, denial of service, insider threats, vulnerabilities, exploits, risk assessment and mitigation strategies. Introduction to Cyber Frauds: definition, scope, impact, role of social engineering; types (phishing, pig butchering scams, identity theft, online shopping and payment frauds, BEC, cryptocurrency frauds, deepfake and social media scams, ransomware and extortion scams). Cryptography Basics: encryption and decryption, symmetric and asymmetric key cryptography, hashing, digital signatures and certificates. Network Security Fundamentals: firewalls, IDS/IPS, VPNs, proxy servers, and wireless security.

Unit II: Cyber Security and Cyber Laws

Security Policies and Management: security planning, incident response, disaster recovery, business continuity planning, security audits. Cyber Laws and Digital Ethics: IT Act 2000 and amendments, intellectual property rights, privacy and data protection laws, cyber forensics, and responsible digital citizenship.
